A little soft in the tough

"A little soft in the tough"
2016
Oil on canvas
106cm x 70.5cm

I was graduated from a all-girls school and I believe that's the reason why some of my friends treated me as a tough girl who are independent and capable for doing everything myself. But honestly, sometimes I do hope being treated like a normal girl too. I could be tough, but sometimes I will feel weak and tired.

I painted this artwork by using painting knife with black and white color to create rough stroke which represent the tough characteristic of me and applied a thin layer of pink color which represent a more girlish of me.

Through

"Through"
2016
Projection through cast colored resin
Dimensions variable

Transparent is a material that which allow light or image to go through. When I was young I always called ‘transparent’ as ‘ white color’, as I grow up I knew it is transparent other than white color. For me transparent it is quite neutral for like telling people they do not exist, but people do know they actually exist and we could see them.Different types of lights effects or images will shown due to different types of transparency or the types and materials of the transparency are made out of.

Now, when we only care about the “effects” that went through the transparency, will we still care and remember for the “transparency” that allows those lights or images to went through?

To represent the “transparency” I decided to use resin to create pieces by pieces which is 10cm x 10cm that textured with ocean’s waves. I choose to use ocean’s waves it is because I like the effects when lights go through and it turns out different angles of lights. I created 12 pieces with different gradient ocean colors and join them all together to become a complete rectangle shape. I hang it in front of the projector to let the light source which have movement ( I do not own the light source) to go through the ocean resin and create lights from different angles.

So when people see the effects of the lights will they still be able to though of or remember that actually the effects of lights was came out by a piece of ocean resin? The “effects” are like form of performance, it could be real or distort, and people like us are using our sense such as what our eyes see to get know the “things”. For the “transparency” are like the innate character which we get know them through our rationality like we knew that those lights effects are because they went through the transparency object which is the ocean resin.

This theory can be represent like how people treat a person or an incident. There’s none an exact answer for my question due to this answer are depends on each person.

That moment

"That moment"
2016
Burnt effect on Kraft paper, image transfer, resin on canvas
Dimensions variable

The theme for this individual project that I decided to do is about time. For me, the definition for print is to record something specific and sometimes that only can be record at that moment. We do remember every moment that are very special like anniversary, birthday, but how about those little simple moment? Like painting a portrait in class today, carving a sculpture this morning, those moment looks very simple, or even bored, could we found some fun or meaning within these moments? The reason I started with people whom surrounding me is to show that even we being in a same place, doing things that alike, what at the same moment what people think, feel are totally different.

Through this idea I started to took photos for people around me and asked them to wrote down their thoughts, feelings, or whatever they wanted to record at that moment in a piece of Kraft paper. I used PVA glue on canvas and paste the photo on it and wait until it completely dry, and start to rub the surface that added some water with my finger. I set the camera setting into black and white and took their photo whether they posed for me or without looking at me, it is because I wanted to took their most natural and comfortable moment which represent their "that moment". I decided to choose this method it is because the way and when I rub off the surface of the photos is like developing film in the old way and the process was quite fun actually. The effect that some part of the photos that accidentally rub off looks like film’s photo was quite interesting.

I added some resin on the canvas like water drops is to represent that time froze at that moment. As I requested each person started with ‘This moment’ in the sentences. The burnt effect that I applied on the Kraft paper is to represent the memories that corrupted by time at that moment. With every pieces the notes that wrote by them I asked them to jot down their time and date to shows that every different moment with every different people.

I decided to hang every pieces with different height of eye level to show like they stop at the moment they drop. And to create a space while they hanging around to let people got space to get in and they can flip to look at the people’s photos and to read the notes they wrote at that moment.
